You must rid from your mind the notion that Sunday’s are merely for going to church in order to fulfill social obligations and to scratch an itch for social interaction. The worship of the triune God, which culminates in this meal, really is transformative.
In the 92nd Psalm, a Psalm for the Sabbath, we are given the description of just how transformative this day of rest and worship is. We enjoy the goodness of giving thanks to our God, and we do so with instruments and music. The deep thoughts of the Lord are proclaimed to us, and these deep thoughts impart to us confidence that our enemies will either be conquered or subdued. While God’s enemies are subdued through the Lord’s Day worship of the saints, like dry grass in a bonfire, the saints of God are likened to the tall cedars, full of sap.
By coming before the Lord each Sabbath day in humble faith, with sincere praise, He changes you. Think of each week, as you gather here to worship and feast with the saints of God, as a new tree ring. You grow taller, sturdier, and the boughs begin to bear fruit for the blessing of the saints. This all takes place by the potency of the Word, the Word which became flesh in order to redeem you entirely.
The Psalmist likens all this to being anointed with oil. The Word is preached, the Supper is served, and God wants you to know that this is how He covers you with the anointing oil for priests and kings. By all this, you are made suitable servants who go throughout this world as priests interceding for the nations and as kings subduing rebels to the Law and Gospel of Christ the King. Here with the bread and wine of Christ’s sufferings, is how God is changing you, and, thus transforming the world.
So, come in faith and welcome to Jesus Christ…
