Faithful saints have always given their children to God. Noah committed his sons to God in the Ark. Abraham in the sign of circumcision and later in being willing to sacrifice Isaac. Moses’ parents committed him to the Lord when they sent him down the Nile River. Moses led Israel to commit their whole household to God’s mercy in the passover. Samuel, once weaned, was sent to serve in God’s house.
In bringing our children to baptism we’re bringing them to the ark, to the covenant, to the house covered in blood, to the tabernacle. We bring them to God, and trust by faith that the sure mercies of Jehovah will be in and with them all their days.
God gives us our children. Our child’s life really is a gift from God to us; in the case of little Andrew, the Lord has made that extra clear for us. And so we are to give back to God the children which He has given to us. How else are we to give them to Him than by the covenant sign which He gave us? This sign which unites us to God’s own Son, which He gave to us for redemption.
So welcome our brother & sister to Jesus Christ…
