The Christian life isn’t one of white-knuckle driving. You aren’t delivered from your sin, cleansed of your shame, and saved from God’s wrath in order to frantically scramble through life like a squirrel looking for acorns in late fall. You are saved to a life of peace.
The peace of God guards your heart (Phi. 4:7). This is the exact opposite of how we often live & think. We think that God gives us His peace, but then it’s up to us to not misplace it. Sort of like your Social Security card. Here’s this very important government document that you’ll need for your whole life, but we printed it on paper towel. Good luck! No, the peace of God is not like that. The peace of God, for the Christian, is like the sky above you and the ground below you. It keeps you. This reality demands that you simply receive it in faith.
Your calendar is, no doubt, full of many good things: baby showers, meetings, commitments, and doctor appointments. Life probably feels quite full. You worry about whether you’re doing enough. You’re sure you’re forgetting something. You tell yourself just to keep your sanity until summer break.
But again, we are explicitly & repeatedly commanded by Scripture: do not fret. Fretting is like getting on your roof with an umbrella during a rainstorm to try to keep your house dry. But in trusting God you are trusting in a good and loving Father who sent His Son to procure your eternal salvation and who gives you His Spirit to enliven you all the days of your life. You trust in God. God Himself. The God who made all things and sustains all things. And so, why are you distressed? Why are you discouraged? Why are you fretting? You dwell in the fortress of His covenant of peace.
