There’s a weird thing that happens when you buy some new thing. As soon as you buy it you suddenly notice all the other people who have it to. A guilty conscience is often like that. It’s on the look out for other people doing that same thing. You then comfort yourself with the knowledge that it must not be all that bad since other people do it.
The guilty conscience hunts for someone, anyone else, to pin the guilt on. Blaming others is a tried and true method of punting the guilt to the other side of the field to get it as far from you as possible. Your wife’s attitude, your mean ol’ boss’ gruffness, your professor’s strictness…if they hadn’t been the way they are, you wouldn’t have done what you did.
This blame-shifting is most cruelly seen in abortion. Our rampant sexual sins are turned into the jagged teeth of crushing forceps. Our porn addiction is abetted by infant-devouring vacuums. Our selfish claim to sexual indulgence without consequence is turned into the burning acid of a pill that dissolves the little body of another. Abortion is an anti-Gospel.
Thus, we oppose abortion and laws like Prop 1 that try to enshrine it, because we know and believe what this bread and wine means. Here we remember Christ’s body was crushed; the burning sulfur of your damning sins was placed entirely upon Him. God appointed His death as the lone means to rid you of your guilt. Abortion is a putrid repudiation of the Gospel of Christ. It attempts to put your sins on someone other than Christ. We detest abortion, and Prop 1, because we cherish the Lamb of God, who alone can take away our sin. This meal compels us to stop the blame-shifting and human sacrifice, because Jesus’ body and blood was given for you.
So, come in faith and welcome to Jesus Christ…
