There’s nothing quite like a hearty meal at the end of a long journey. The strain of the trek is met with a renewing meal and a relaxing drink. While heaven’s glories await us, first comes the long trek home. The way is dangerous and arduous. Robbers, goblins, and internet trolls try to waylay your path.
This meal, therefore, is a wonderful reminder of the “already, not yet” of the Christian sojourn. In this meal we already partake of Christ by faith. We receive, now, all the bounty He won through His death, resurrection, and everlasting session. But it also reminds us of the “not yet.” We proclaim in this feast the Lord’s death, until He comes.
And then…
You come at last into the perfect rest, the boundless store, the undying age. The journey will be complete, and then the real and final feast shall commence. Somehow, the pangs of hunger will be no more, but the joy of satisfied hunger will remain. You shall not want, but shall never cease desiring in and being rewarded with the fullness of the unveiled glory of God.
But that feast comes by faith. So, to help your faith along the way God gives signs for our feeble sight. Bread and wine testifying that the God who created heaven and earth, and whose wrath is fierce against evil, has made a way for your sins to be passed over and for you to be welcomed to that endless feast. For those who have eyes to see, this feast before us today is, by the power of the Spirit, in the very courts of heaven. For those who have ears to hear this bread says, “Peace on earth” this wine says, “Tidings of great joy.” All because, and only because, of Christ who was broken for You.
So come in faith and welcome to Jesus Christ…
