When God covenanted with Abraham part of God’s oath was “to be a God unto thee”; and to Abraham’s offspring God promised, “I will be their God.” Perhaps you might ask, “Isn’t God already the God of everybody?” Why does God promise to be our God? Ancient deities dangled the carrot of provision, protection, or pleasure before loyal worshippers. Nevertheless, the drought came, a bigger tribe conquered, or plagues eradicated. These gods could promise, but couldn’t perform.
Not so with Jehovah. He is the great King above all gods; and all creatures owe Him praise. But so long as one serves other gods, Jehovah owes you nothing. Yet He alone can make good on divine promises. How then can you bind yourself to Almighty God and secure all the blessings He bestows upon His followers? The answer is that wonderful word: grace. He was under no obligation to reveal to mankind how to obtain His protection, provision, and pleasures. In baptism, God makes the same vow to you that He made to Abraham: I will be your God. And if He is your God then all His gifts flow down to you: faith, repentance, forgiveness, and, in the end, a heavenly city with immovable foundations.
