Largely due to revivalism’s influence on American Evangelicalism we forage in all the wrong spots for spiritual life. We rummage around in the desk drawers of our emotions hoping to discover there an electric current that could power the entire house. But no matter how many stubby pencils and used spools of thread you find there, the proof of spiritual life isn’t hiding there.
Spiritual life is found in the Living Word; the potent Word of the Incarnate Christ. That is why true faith looks away from self and looks to Christ alone for proof of spiritual life. If you look at your emotions, your mind, your will, or your circumstances, you will be discouraged or deceived in your search for life. These baptismal waters compel us to look away from self and to look in faith to Christ alone. Those who look to Him have true life. Abundant life. Everlasting life.
