We’ve witnessed a global spasm of thoughtless compliance. What’s always been true, but not easily seen, has now been brought to the light. That is, when mankind rejects God’s ultimate authority, our immune system is quickly overrun by the totalizing tendency of unbelief. Unbelief causes men––both at the individual level and at the national level—to believe themselves capable of total control. This then produces simpleminded compliance population-wide.
Before conversion we insist on obeying our own will and comply with every instinct which arises from our sinful nature. We’re habituated to comply with tyrants orders, because we’ve complied with the insane demands of our sinful nature. You’ve never sinned because it was the most reasonable thing to do. Look back at your sins of lust, envy, greed, or lying. There was no need for any of it. You felt more miserable after it. You didn’t gain anything by it other than a burdened conscience. Sin presents a reasonable face, but it’s a mask to hide the insanity. Sin however, is never content with past conquests. It always wants more power, more control, more flattery.
If we would build a culture that’s resilient in objecting to the demands of tyrants, we must start from the liberty of conscience which comes through faith in Christ alone. The Gospel lays the axe to the trunk sin’s tyranny—whether within the individual or in the Nation. By Christ’s blood we’re liberated to say “no†to our sins, and “no†to the demands of wicked rulers. Gospel forgiveness purges your guilty conscience, and so enables you to disregard tyrant’s orders with a clear conscience.
This is the Cornerstone on which a healthy nation must be founded. Yes to all of God’s commands, and stubborn resistance to all sinful commands issued from earthly governments.Â
Over the last year, God upended the world. It is clear that all too many people both outside and inside the church are more concerned with falling in line with the vacillating orders of would-be tyrants than they are with following God’s Word. The Gospel liberates us, not to lawlessness, but to true obedience to the Law. Yet we opt for the perceived security of a man-made system of law. Our sins of lust, greed, fear, and pride have entangled our nation in a mess of capricious and contradictory dictates from D.C. to Townhall. The church has complied in too many instances with the madness of sin which afflicts our governors, HR departments, schools, and families. May God grant us repentance for complying with the often sinful Word of Man, while disobeying the righteous Word of God.Â
