Recall that old evangelical image of needing to cross a chasm in order to attain salvation. Your good works don’t have enough oomph to launch you from this side to the other. On our side is death, while on the other side is salvation, forgiveness, and everlasting life. Of course, the evangelist explains that the only way to cross the chasm from this world of death & damnation to reach the celestial city of God which awaits on the far side is the cross of Jesus.
This evangelical parable is quite true. The Apostle Paul explained that all those descended from Adam are doomed to die. That’s the bad side of the chasm. The other side is for those in Christ. The most important question is how to go from Adam to Christ; and Paul’s answer is baptism. Baptism is the mighty wave of God’s grace which sweeps doomed sinners up and carries us over to golden shore of the life of Christ. In this act of baptism we launch this child forth on the voyage of faith in Christ, trusting that by God’s grace she shall be brought at last to the eternal rest which awaits all the elect of God.
So welcome our sister to Jesus Christ…
